Van Aert Suffers Injuries in Stage 11 Crash

Wout van Aert's hopes of winning the Vuelta a España took a significant hit on Wednesday after the rider suffered injuries in a crash during Stage 11.

The incident occurred approximately 100 kilometers into the stage, as the peloton descended the Col de Jau.

Van Aert, who had been riding in the front group, went down along with several other riders.

Van Aert Diagnosed with Fractured Fibula

According to a statement released by his team, Visma–Lease a Bike, Van Aert was diagnosed with a fractured fibula.

The injury is expected to sideline the Belgian rider for several weeks.

"This is a big setback for Wout and for the team," said Visma–Lease a Bike directeur sportif Merijn Zeeman.

"He was in great shape and was a contender for the overall victory. We will now focus on getting him the best possible care and supporting him in his recovery."

Van Aert's Vuelta Ambitions Crushed

The injury comes as a major blow to Van Aert's hopes of winning the Vuelta a España.

The 28-year-old had been in excellent form throughout the race, winning two stages and wearing the leader's red jersey for several days.

However, with his fractured fibula, Van Aert is now unlikely to be able to compete for the overall victory.

Van Aert is scheduled to undergo surgery on Thursday to repair his fractured fibula.
